Chapter 21

Dream Walkers

“But, but he's so strong now. This should be a walk in the park for him.”

I swallowed back bile. “Max is already joined. He must have done it as soon as the sun set, or even last night, but he's powerful. Oh God, Bruno, he's so powerful.” I started shaking and a small sob escaped before I could stop it. Bruno looked tormented, unsure what to do.

“I have to go to him, Bruno. You have to let me sleep.”

He just kept shaking his head back and forth, back and forth. “No. No. No. I...I can't let you, Luce. I just can't.” Still shaking his head in protest.

“Arghh! This isn't funny, Bruno, he's being hurt, I can feel it. Everything. His astonishment, his disbelief, rage, fear. It's all here inside me too, I can't stand it, Bruno! I can't breathe.”

Bruno just kept shaking his head, like one of those clowns at the Easter Show, you know the ones with their mouths open, waiting for a ping-pong ball to be thrown in, rolling their heads from side to side. Although, I didn't have a ping-pong ball and there was no big fluffy Easter bunny waiting for me to win.

“He'll be all right. He has Alessandra, Enrique and Jock with him. Three first level masters. He'll be all right.”

“Jock's dead.”

I saw it then. The realisation hit him that this had been a mistake. That his world was about to be upended and whatever it was that had kept him at Michel's side for so long; loyalty, love, affection, whatever it was, was tormenting him now. His master was in trouble and he couldn't help.

“I'll try, Luce. I'll try to let you sleep.”

I breathed a sigh of relief and went to the bedroom to lie down on the bed. Centring myself again, blocking out the fever pitch of emotions coming from Michel and homing in on the beat of my heart. I felt myself start to drift towards that nothingness. That complete and utter blankness. I could feel it up ahead, getting closer, just within my reach. A little further, just a little further. Almost there.

And then I was being shaken awake by a big brute of a vampire with the most anguished and conflicted look on his face. “Can't let you sleep. Can't let you sleep. Can't. Let .You .Sleep.”

I was so angry. I had been so close, almost there and now I was awake and feeling everything that Michel was feeling all over again. So far away from him and so close at the same time.

I reached out and grabbed Bruno by his stupid thick shoulders and stared him in the eyes. He met mine and didn't look away.

“You are going to let me sleep, Bruno and you will NOT interfere!”

He just nodded. “OK.”

What the? He was getting up and walking out to the couch, sitting himself down and looking into space like a lobotomised bodyguard on sentry duty.

Bloody hell, I'd just glazed a vampire.

You see, here's the thing. A vampire can glaze a human.
